A Long Weekend in St Davids: A Three-Day Itinerary for Two

The medieval City Cross on Cross Square in the centre of St Davids

A long weekend is the perfect amount of time to fall for St Davids. The city is small enough to explore on foot, but there’s enough on the doorstep to fill three very happy days. Here’s how we’d spend them.

Day one: settle in and explore the city

Check-in at Tŷ Cosy is from 3pm, so take your time on the journey. Once you’ve parked in your space and unpacked, wander into the city centre. Cross Square, with its old stone cross, is the heart of St Davids, and it’s lined with independent shops, galleries and cafés.

From there, head down to St Davids Cathedral. It sits in a hidden valley below the town, so the view as you walk through the gatehouse is quite something. Next door are the ruins of the Bishop’s Palace.

For dinner, book a table at Cwtch on the High Street, then stroll home for a nightcap by the log burner.

Day two: out on the water and down on the beach

Start the day with a boat trip around Ramsey Island. Thousand Islands Expeditions runs wildlife trips from St Davids, with boats leaving from St Justinian’s. Look out for seals, seabirds and porpoise in Ramsey Sound. Trips depend on the tide and weather, so book a day or two ahead.

In the afternoon, head to Whitesands Bay, just a five-minute drive away. Swim, walk, or simply sit and watch the surfers. Stay for the sunset if you can.

In the evening, walk round to the Farmers Arms on Goat Street for a pint by the fire. Or stay in and let a private chef cook dinner for you at the cottage.

Day three: a coastal walk and a slow goodbye

Check-out is by 10am, so pack up after breakfast. Then leave the car at Oriel y Parc and walk the short loop to St Non’s Chapel and Porthclais harbour on the Coast Path. It takes a couple of hours and gives you one last dose of sea air.

Back at Oriel y Parc, have a look around the gallery and grab brunch at the café before you set off home.
