Coast Path Walks from St Davids: St Non’s, Porthclais and Caerfai

Porthclais harbour seen from the Pembrokeshire Coast Path near St Davids

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs right past St Davids, and you can be walking along the clifftops within minutes of leaving Tŷ Cosy. No car needed, no complicated planning, just boots on and off you go. Here are the walks we recommend most.

The St Non’s and Porthclais loop (about 3.5 to 4 miles)

This is our favourite short walk, and it’s perfect for your first afternoon. Head south out of the city to Caerfai Bay, a sheltered sandy cove that’s about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the cottage. Join the Coast Path and follow it west towards St Non’s.

St Non’s is said to be the birthplace of Saint David, and the ruined chapel and holy well sit on a quiet clifftop overlooking the sea. It’s a peaceful spot to stop for a few minutes.

Carry on along the path to Porthclais, a tiny harbour where the River Alun meets the sea. From here, follow the lane and footpaths back inland to St Davids. Allow a couple of hours, including stops.

Whitesands to St Davids Head

For bigger views, start at Whitesands Bay and follow the Coast Path north towards St Davids Head. The headland is wild and rocky, and on a clear day the views out to sea are wonderful. If you’ve still got energy, climb Carn Llidi, the rocky hill above the beach, for a panorama over Ramsey Island and the coast.

In summer, the Celtic Coaster shuttle bus runs from Oriel y Parc to Whitesands, so you can leave the car in your space at the cottage and catch the bus out.

A few tips before you go

  • Wear proper walking boots. The path can be uneven, muddy and close to the cliff edge.
  • Pack a waterproof and a warm layer, even in summer. The weather changes quickly on the coast.
  • Check the forecast and stay well back from the edge in strong winds.
  • Take water and a snack, as there aren’t many cafés on the quieter stretches.

Come home to a warm welcome

The best part of a day on the Coast Path is coming back to Tŷ Cosy. Rinse off the mud under the heated outdoor shower in the courtyard, light the log burner and put your feet up. For more ideas, browse our local experiences, or check availability and plan your walking break.
